It has 84,000 actual miles. '67 was a unique year for VWs. Most notably it was the first year for a 12 volt electrical system. Everything works on this one, even the back up and interior lights. Also, this one has two extra cost options...the pop-out rear windows were a $25 extra and the leatherette seats were a $35 add on bringing the original sticker to $1,892. It was the only year for the 1500cc engine rated at 54hp...and some would contend that it was the VW Type 1's best engine.

passed away on September 18.

Claudia's note:

Dear friends,

I returned last night from my mission trip to Kenya. I am forever and always full of gratitude to have been born in the United States. I will never take our simple gifts of lifestyle for granted again. It was absolutely amazing to discover how little it takes to survive - and minimal survival was all that I witnessed throughout Kenya.

The day I was to leave Kenya, Stuart called to tell me that Mom had just died. She died in her sleep at 11:00 PM Tuesday night. We will have a graveside service at Alexandria Memorial Gardens at 10 AM Saturday. I ask for your love and prayers for my family at his time. She lived a full and rich life and is now free of Alzheimer's and is dancing in Heaven with her mom, who she has not seen in 80 years, and my dad and other loved siblings, family members , and friends. I grieve for my loss only, not for her.

Life is precious, isn't it? I am glad that you all are in my life.

A Classmate from Aiken

Mike Day had kept up with a classmate of 6 years at Aiken Elementary who moved away after a year at AJH, Larry Newcome. Mike relates that Larry passed away from cancer back in February with these words:

I wanted to advise you that Larry Newcome who is in the address group passed away in February and was buried in Arlington the first week of March of this year after a fierce battle with cancer. He left behind a wonderful, loving, and devoted wife, two sons, and daughter who miss him enormously.

Larry would have graduated with our class had he not moved to Jackson, MS, after the 7th grade. We went to grammar school together all six years at Aiken, and in the 7th grade at AJH - Mrs. C. Moore was our home room teacher. He graduated from LSU with a BS in aeronautical engineering in 1972 and was commissioned in the U. S. Air Force via ROTC. He retired from the Air Force as a lieutenant colonel a couple of years before 9-11, but no one deserved to wear a colonel's eagles more than Larry.

We were good friends from the first grade at Aiken until his death. We were roommates in Johnson Hall at LSU in 1968-69. Over the years, we communicated often about many interests, concerns, and things. Larry was smart, completely loyal and reliable in all things, personally brave, and he valued his service to our republic, his family and his integrity over all other things. His obituary in the Washington Post was three sentences - he deserved more. While his obituary was consistent with his preference for discretion and privacy, it was unfair to him and his achievements. Larry was a stand-up man and very accomplished in his profession.

Larry was an early supporter and passionate champion of using unmanned aircraft in the U. S. Air Force. The Air Force was at the time a military service completely committed to manned flight and NOT unmanned flight. Larry's tireless promotion of the UAV in the pentagon could have been seen as heresy and very inconvenient. But, ultimately Larry's work and support to make the UAV an effective intelligence gathering tool in Bosnia would ultimately save many lives in Afghanistan. Larry was very involved in the development, deployment experimentation, and evolution of the Lockheed RQ3A Dark Star, RQ4Global Hawk, and RQ9 Predator. In the end, Larry was a civilian manager of a portion of the Predator's hunting territory until he became unable to continue full time work at the end of 2009.

One could not ask for a better friend and confidant than Larry. I really miss him.

I was so sad to learn of Charlie Yeager's death - he was always one of my heroes at Bolton (and object of a long-held and very private "crush"). He was so sweet, so friendly and kind, so cute, so smart, and so civic-minded.

Ann Pierson Patten
Charlie Yeager was one of my favorites. His cute wit, twinkle in his eye and quick comments caught my attention. In the 8th grade we ran against each other for President of the Student Body at Alexandria Junior High School. I actually ran against 4 boys, Greg Walker and Brad Lowther included. Charlie was quite confident that he would win and he reminded me that it was only my first year in public schools! Oh well, I won! The loss hit him hard but I always admired his ability to congratulate me and ask me to the end-of-year dance. I did go with him and had lots of fun!

I was sorry to hear about Charlie Yeager. He worked in the Attorney General's office for part of the time while I was counsel to the Inspector General and I ran into him a couple of times.

The Kubota is a great help, but the Sears tiller

The chickens are about to be fenced out.
Not easy to see, but the beans have sprouted, so has the corn
(maybe Johnny Cash should chime in right now)

31 tomato plants, cucumbers (after replanting), squash,

lots of okra and watermelon.

The fence is to keep our chickens and the deer out.
After the watermelons get ripe,
we'll find out if it keeps the coons out.

Remember that if you were sick you had to stand in line outside Mr. Taylor's office and he called you in, and then phoned your parent while you’re standing there? And remember his absolute monotone and cold icy blue-eyed stare? Imagine that voice and this scene:

Kathy Derbonne is really sick (as opposed to just wanting to cut the rest of the day’s classes). She is literally about to keel over. She gets into Mr. Taylor’s office and says she feels like she is going to faint. He doesn’t bat an eyelash. He phones her mom: “Miz Derbonne, this is Douglas Tay-lah at Bo’ton Ha Skule. Your daughter is in my office saying she feels like she is going to faint.” (pause, same monotone, doesn’t bat an eyelash) “Miz Derbonne, your daughter has now fainted. You will need to come pick her up.” He doesn’t change his tone, doesn’t get up from his desk to peel Kathy off the floor, he just motions to the next person in line (me) to come into his office. It was classic.

Jan Butler Autry is quite ill having been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease. She is in a wheelchair & is experiencing the later stages of this horrible disease. Just to let you know. We have no power at our camp, so we are in Dallas at our oldest daughters. Love spending time with the grandkids...but it's not home. Hope to have the power back on soon and we can go home.
On a positive not. My wife Kay has had such a good time with all the reunion, that she is spearheading her 40th reunion. No one had done anything, so after ours she started sending out stuff, got some people involved and got them going. The reunion is next weekend, and we are looking forward to it. Hope it's as much fun as ya'll do...

The blogspot has remained static since May, and surely there are news items and new photos that could be posted. If you would like to post items of general interest, do send a message and the User ID and password will be provided.
Besides just good news, and glad tidings, items bearing bad report could be of vital interest to us all. Spouses of 2 classmates passed away in recent days. Others are battling cancer of other serious conditions and diseases. Feel free to share this so that we as a group might share in the hardships as well as the better times.
As Gustav has seemingly set its sights on us, let us all collectively pray that God will protect us, will help us weather the storm, and will direct our actions so that we might help others.

Went to my wife's 40th reunion at Glenmora High on 4/25. They had 35 in their graduating class. There were yearbooks for '64 through '68. While perusing them, I found photos 2 of our fellow graduates who had attended school there, Charlie Burgin and Nancy Childree. Nancy attended our 30th reunion and recognized my wife. Our records show she lives in DeRidder with her husband from the class of '69, Chris Tidwell. Charlie's last known address is Jennings, LA.

Just a reminder, start right now if you haven't already and drum up support for our 45th reunion. No date has been set, but we need to miss March 31, 2013, weekend which will be Easter; however, the spring weather was truly nice. How about the week before or the week after?

Thanks so much for the wonderful time. It was a thrill to see all the folks after 40 years. It was a trip to walk into the community center and have Lynn Davis recognize me.
It was such great fun to be able to walk through the school after all these years. What was interesting was how little the school has changed and how the memories of walking the halls came back in a instant.
Don and I had a great time. I was sick on the way home to New York, but it was worth every moment for the wonderful time I had at the reunion.

Thanks to the committee for the wonderful time we had at the reunion. I know it must have been a hard endeavor to put this reunion together. At first it was hard to recognize some but as you look closer the friendship of warmth and love overcomes the forgetfulness of us all. Again Doris and I had a wonderful time.

I must take a moment to give a great big thank you and a note of appreciation to all the work you all did in preparing for our weekend. It was fun having it in the spring because the weather was beautiful and I loved being across the street from the party - the location was perfect. What a great pleasure to be a part of such a wonderful class. I am sure that there are other stories of happiness and success out there that we haven't even heard about, but we are an impressive group. I do not believe I have ever been surrounded by such a great company of beautiful people! It was a blast! I just thought we were awesome back then, now I know that we are! Many took a tour of Bolton at 10 AM and found things exactly as we had left them, if you count escalators not running and no air conditioning. Noon had things ready at the community center for lunch and fat chewing. Here are a few photos:

You should have been there. On Easter weekend about 75 class members and many spouses joined together to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the graduation of the J. W.
